Practice
Leave groups you no longer want to belong to, and groups whose purpose has ended. Keep a membership only while it still has a current reason.
Start small
Leave one group that was created for a past event.
Watch out
Some groups still hold a role you have, or records other people rely on. Check before leaving. Move anything that must last out of the group first.
